Leadership Management Skills
“How to develop Management Skills for Leading your Business?”
Mitch McCrimmon defined leadership as cluttered with too many meanings and we need to cut through the fog to really understand it. A leader is anyone who influences a particular group toward a specific goal. And in everyday life, there is always a leader that we follow and obey.
There are three different types of leaders according to Murray Hannsen, they are the Laissez-Faire, Autocratic and the Totalitarian Type. The Laissez-Faire tends to minimize amount of direction and face time required, the Autocratic is the Dictatorial Type Totalitarian and the Dictatorial Type has participative leadership style.
In Psychology, a leader is often defines as a person who rules, inspire and guides others. Great Nations and small organizations have leaders who act as facilitators in our everyday functions. Leaders are the founder of every group or institution. And that we can define leadership as something that should be learned and that it is not something that is innate in us. So when others say, “ You’re a natural born Leader. “, this is not how I define leadership.
Management skills is the ability to handle the organization of the company or institution with efficiency and accuracy. This should be a frontrunner in every organization. It is a skill that can be learned. Others would say that these are the skills that you use everyday to survive and get along with others. Within the work group, a manager is someone who facilitates the organization.
Good leaders are always needed in every organization and an effective leader should have different management skills. And that this holds true by saying that leaders should always be hardworking and true to their words. Thus a good leader should always be a good example for others to follow.
H. Tyler Maits said that a leader can be a manager however a manager is not automatically a leader. The leader of a work group may materialize unofficially as the choice of leader unbeknownst to the person. Leadership is a quality that successful managers must possess.
Management Skills are also defined on the practice of understanding, developing and deploying people and their skills. Robert Katz listed three managerial skills that are vital to successful management. They are the technical skills which involves process, knowledge or proficiency; the human skills which involve interaction with people; the conceptual skills which is formulation of ideas and concepts.
Interest in leadership increased during the early part of the 20th century. As we all remember Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King or Bill Clinton. They all have something in common, they all have a vision, a mission that they want to achieve for their countrymen. This is in the political setting, wherein one should stand as a leader for the benefits of the majority. And that everything should start with a leader…and this leader should have a certain goal which will help others be it a success or a failure.
All leaders should have good management skills. They all have a compassion for people, understanding their mission and reach specific goals. This means that a leader is someone who has a heart for others, a compassion and enthusiasm for people. Thus whatever plans that they have for themselves always will be fruitful for others. And in order for these leaders to become efficient and effective, they must be well equipped in applying the theories of management.
In an organizational setting, leaders are often described as someone who takes everything into its place, makes sure that every employee are in a geed working environment and assists them in all their concerns. These leaders should be good role models. Leadership and management skills go hand in hand, since the industry as well as the society are composed of units called people. It’s like a glue that binds things together, someone who handles people toward a common goal.
In our everyday experiences, we have come to accept leaders as the people who handles subordinates. These leaders should also know how to respect others and attend to every individual’s needs. So as a conclusion, I must say that good leaders should always be good followers. And they should emulate God in all their actions, as well as sowing seeds for the benefit of others. To be a good leader is tantamount to goals, respect and vision, which is selfless. As the Chinese Proverb said “ Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. “.
